Most people do not know their special purpose
When asked if people feel that they have a special purpose, most people answer No. The reality is that each of us has a set of unique talents, gifts and abilities and a special purpose. If we lack awareness of what these are, we may have to look at ourselves through the eyes of the people we impact on a daily basis.
Others can often see your special purpose for you
As you think about each interaction you have with others, whether it is by telephone, in person or by email, you are having an impact on that other person. You can ask others to tell you what your special purpose is. You can ask others how you impact them. Your cheerful attitude may brighten the day of others. Your listening skills may reduce the stress of others. Your pragmatism may prevent mistakes. Your humor may lighten someones load. Your positive feedback may help someone increase their confidence. Your innovation and creativity may inspire greatness. Your analytical skills may help others make better decisions. Your skilled work may create products and services that help customers meet their needs.
A special note for leaders, managers and supervisors
As a leader, you have an additional responsibility. You must recognize your own special purpose and help the people who work for you recognize their purpose, special talents and abilities. Your feedback to them will help them get greater fulfillment from work and make your leadership job more enjoyable and effective.
Tips for discovering your purpose
1. Take an inventory reflect and list your talents & abilities. This is not a time to be shy and humble. This is your chance to brag about yourself to yourself.
2. Ask others ask those people who know you well or who you interact with frequently to tell you what they see as your greatest talents & abilities and the impact is has on them.
3. Research and reflect there are many books available today that will help you on your journey of significance.
