Here are some ideas, processes and solutions to help your organization become more accountable and successful in 2006 and achieve the performance improvements you desire.
Identify the Performance Opportunities
In a competitive business environment, now is the time to reflect on where your people need to develop in order to achieve higher performance. What is holding your company back from its full potential? Get answers to these questions:
- Are profits high enough?
- Are managers and employees held accountable?
- Is there excess waste and duplication of effort?
- Are managers and supervisors making decisions their employees should be making?
- Are employees delivering exceptional customer service?
- Is there enough innovation and creativity to meet future customer needs?
- Are margins high enough?
- Are sales people bringing in new customers and maximizing the potential of their account base?
Identify the Desired Behaviours & Skill Sets
List the current and desired behaviours based on your observations of how managers, supervisors and employees act on a day-to-day basis.
Use the free downloadable Current/Desired Behavior Worksheet below. Each member of your management team could write their own list and then compare notes.
Some desired behaviours could include:
- Managers and employees make supportive and positive comments about other departments
- Employees make decisions they are capable of making
- Employees set achievable expectations with customers
- Managers spend more of their time communicating
- Employees think before they act and eliminate waste
- Employees and managers spend time innovating instead of constantly problem solving
- Managers spend time developing and coaching their people to improve performance
- People at all levels are clear about what is expected of them and accountable for the results they generate
Identify the Possible Training Sources & Methods
The purpose of training is to change behaviours. While some organizations have the internal capacity to deliver behaviour-changing training, many companies will seek out an external partner who can bring an objective, outside influence to the table. By being detached, the external training provider can influence behaviours at the most senior levels to the front line with less concern for internal politics and influence.
